More and more producers of hatching eggs are changing over to managing parent birds in cages and natural fertilization. The following speak in favour of this technology:

If you decide in favour of keeping groups of parents in cages, then you should also decide to use the MELLER family cage.
The MELLER parent bird (family cage) batteries reflect the latest knowledge concerning the keeping of parent birds in cages.
We have modified tried and tested elements from the other MELLER batteries, embodying state of the art technology, for the parent bird battery. In this way, the parent bird (family cage) battery is distinguished by the characteristics which are synonymous with MELLER products all over the world.
Measurements and design which take the bird into consideration characterize the MELLER family cage. The cages, measuring 200x90x68 cm (width x depth x height), offer 30 birds (e.g. 27 hens and 3 cockereis) sufficient space. The 600cm² space per bird guarantees the hens and cockereis the required freedom of movement.
The cages are closed off at the sides by sheet steel walls. This avoids Restlessness amongst the birds especially at feeding time.
Upon request the cage width can be varied by increments of 100cm to allow the egg producer to determine the group size according to personal requirements.
Galvanized egg roll down shelves comply with EC guidelines concerning wire gauge, wire spacing and angle of inclination and are also in line with the birds requirements. There is a stable perch in the middle of the cage section. The feeding throughs are attached to both front sides of the cage. This ensures a spacious feeding area for the birds (>13cm per bird).
The feeding grid with different shapes takes the size and feeding behaviour of the hens andcockereis into account. The feeding grids, i.e. Cage doors are designed as push fences and therefore facilitate putting the birds into and removing them from the cage.
Lines with the drinking nipples set a 50 cm apart run along both sides of the cage front. In this way, there is one drinking nipple available for at least four birds. Drip pans can be mounted underneath the drinking nipples. The height of the drinking trays can be easily adapted to the height of the birds. The parent bird battery (family cage) is available as a 2- or 3- tier version.
As one should expect with specialists for manure belt equipped batteries, MELLER parent bird battery excrement removal takes place using PP manure removal belts.
Optimal running of the PP belts is possible due to large drive rollers and additional driven counterpressure rollers. The manure belts are driven by geared motors the rating of which is adapted to each battery lenght.
Roller chains of chain wheels transmit the power to the drive rollers and the counterpressure rollers. The drives are designed to transport batteries with a total lenght of over 100 meters. Spring mounted manure scrapers are used to clean manure belts.
Reversing rollers are located on the battery side opposite the drive, permitting the manure belts to be tensioned by way of threaded spindles. Cup shaped roller scrapers and V-scrapers guarantee perfect running of the manure removal belts.
Manure removal using manure belts is the prerequisite for dry manure technology which is less harmful to the environment. A dry substance content of up to 60% is achieved due to longer storing of the manure on the belts (up to 7 days) and intensive aeration.
A large volume air duct can be fitted with holes working as air nuzzles to enhance manure in the middles of the cage above the manure belts. The special type of MELLER air duct ensures maximum drying of the manure on the manure belts. When fitted with an air duct, the battery is 12 cm wider than the standard version
Upon request the parent bird battery (family cage) can be equipped with the following feeding systems.
The HA-matic feed carrier is particularly suitable for smaller systems due to its easy construction and the manual operation. Its food bins with throughfeed channels permit not only a low construction height but also the automatic supply of feed from the food hopper.
The size of the food bin is adapted to the individual battery length. The amount of feed dispensed can be regulated using slides.
Upon request an electric drive with a timer can be supplied for the HA-matic feed carrier, enabling fully automatic operation.
One of the fundamental advantages of the feed carriers is that the feed remains well mixed and therefore all birds are allocated equal feed.
The feed carrier has its own drive. During feeding (forwards movement) the screws driven by the motor convey the feed into the outlet chutes leading to the troughs. The feed is distributed uniformly into the feed through, where the amount of feed can be regulated using slides in the outlet chutes. Dosing carriages ensure an exact distribution of feed, thus enabling restrictive feeding of the parent birds.
A mounted free wheel prevents a further feed taking place during automatic reverse run of the feed carrier into its end position. Timer set feeding can take place automatically.
The MELLER chain feeding system provides an alternative feeding system for the parent bird battery.
Chain feeding takes place by way of a circulating flat link chain in conjunction with special feeding troughs and guide corners. The MELLER chain feeding system uses a feeding column and a electric drive.
The chain feeding drives can be supplied to suit different feeding chain speeds.
The drive motors are rated according to the feeding chain speed and the battery length. The daily amount and the number of feedings can be varied by way of the height of the feeding stand in the through slide (adjustable) to allow restrictive feeding.
All chain feeding functions can be automated by way of the corresponding eletric controls (timer)
Due to the inclination of the cage floor, the eggs roll into the collection chutes positioned on the outside of the cages. The eggs can be collected manually or automatically from the egg collection chutes using the renowned MELLER egg transport system.
Circulating longitudinal collection belts are required for mechanical egg collection, the egg collection chutes already being designed for this purpose. These convey the eggs to the end of the battery row, from which point they are passed onto the egg cross belt via the egg collection or liftsystem.
The collectors or the multi storey conveyors can be fitted with collection tables if desired, particulary with smaller systems.
